POSITION TITLE:                 COAL ACTIVIST SUPPORT COORDINATOR

DEPARTMENT:                     GRASSROOTS

LOCATION:                            SAN FRANCISCO, CA, or WASHINGTON, DC

SUPERVISOR:                       GRASSROOTS COAL MANAGER

Are there easier jobs? Yes. Could there be a better job? Unlikely.

America's 650+ coal-burning power plants are the largest single source of global warming pollution in the country, and the toxic smoke that billows from them shortens the lives of tens of thousands of Americans each year. These plants also produce enough toxic ash and sludge every year to fill train cars stretching from the North Pole to the South Pole. In spite of these alarming facts, the coal industry has maintained a stranglehold on our government and, between 2002 and 2008, American tax dollars were spent on coal industry subsidies to the tune of about 40 billion dollars. Something needs to change. It’s time for an energy revolution.

Greenpeace is shutting down dirty coal-fired power plants, exposing the industry's influence on our politicians and helping to build a powerful movement of trained, passionate activists demanding energy policy that values people over polluters. The coal activist training program will play an integral role in Greenpeace’s national campaign to close coal-fired power plants around the country and replace them with renewable energy and efficiency technologies.

The coal activist training program will work with the New Organizing Institute to pilot a training model aimed at developing leaders. Greenpeace’s Quit Coal campaign will be a “living laboratory” to track progress and effectiveness.

The goals of our coal activist training program are to:

1.      Support Greenpeace’s coal campaign by training activists and building relationships with groups and leaders on the ground in strategic communities. Specifically, we will train at least 240 activists in 2011 to fulfill grant deliverables.

2.      Pioneer new, cutting-edge activist training models to be tested through this program. Eventually, we hope to integrate new training models into the broader organization, as appropriate.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

As part of the coal activist training team you’ll play an integral role in building a cutting-edge program, from naming the program and developing training curriculum, to creating outreach materials and delivering passionate, effective trainings. Specifically, your team will:

·         Collaborate with the New Organizing Institute to pilot, test, and refine a cutting-edge training model for issue-based campaigns

·         Coordinate with other Greenpeace departments and programs, especially the coal campaign, other teams in the grassroots department, and the communications, actions and online departments to accomplish programmatic goals

·         Devise and implement a complete activist recruitment plan to reach out to and network with local groups and activists

·         Maintain a database of activists and groups who take part in the training, including information on skills, experience and level of involvement

·         Ensure local activists are plugged into Greenpeace after the training so that they continue to receive support and information as needed

·         Recruit skilled trainers and inspiring key note speakers (both internally from Greenpeace and externally from other organizations)

·         Innovate, test and evaluate the training program’s effectiveness in leadership development

You will be one of two trainers on the team and play a leadership role.  As one of the first people hired to the team you’ll be asked to help decide what the training models will look like and identify communities and local leaders we’d like to invest in.  As the program develops, you will spearhead the coal training strategy, be responsible for testing, analyzing, and sharing training results, be the primary point of contact with coalition partners, and lead internal coordination with other grassroots programs and the coal team.

This is a contract position renewable in 2012 pending continued grant funding.  Salary is competitive and includes benefits.

EXPERIENCE AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

·         A minimum of 4 years experience in grassroots organizing with experience as a trainer required

·         Proven ability to work both independently and in close coordination with a team, inspire activists, and build leaders

·         Well-rounded with ability to work with a variety of people and groups

·         Proven experience in directing a project from conception to completion and clear track record in overseeing effective campaigns

·         Strong skills and experience in public speaking and organizing people around an issue

·         Commitment to non-violence and grassroots organizing as means of affecting change

·         Willingness to travel

·         BS/BA

You: A passionate grassroots organizer.  In the United States, coal is

citizens and groups to challenge decision-makers to make local
chemical plants safer and to expose the polluter lobbyists who are
undermining science-based climate legislation.  You are happy wearing
a suit to a morning lobby meeting with key allies and a local member
of Congress, only to get paint on an old pair of jeans that evening
while painting a banner with local volunteers.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Lead regional fights to shut down coal-fired power plants while balancing the demands of ongoing work for our oceans, forests, and other priority campaigns
  • Build lasting relationships with a variety of strategic allies
