Conservation Corps MN & IA Field Crew Leader/Member Positions Still Available

(AmeriCorps Position) Spend a year outdoors conserving natural resources, gain field experience and make a difference. Full-time commitment, Mon-Thurs, ages 18-25.

Conservation Corps Minnesota & Iowa is accepting applications for Field Crew leaders and members. Corpsmembers participate in on the job training to learn natural resource management skills and put those skills into practice working on conservation projects across the upper Midwest.

Responsibilities:
Crew Members and Leaders will receive training and complete various conservation projects such as tree planting, prairie restoration, exotic species management, streambank stabilization, GPS/GIS mapping, wildlife surveys, carpentry/construction, timber stand improvement, lakeshore restoration, erosion control, prescribed burning, environmental education, trail construction & maintenance, wildlife habitat improvement, wildland fire fighting and emergency response.

The Crew Leader is responsible for daily crew operations, leading a crew of 3-4 members and motivating the crew to work safely, effectively, and efficiently. The Leader assists with Member training and development, providing on-site education, assisting with equipment maintenance, and helping members improve technical skills. In addition, the Crew Leader serves as a liaison between project hosts and the crew, communicating with project hosts to determine project priorities and equipment needs.

Qualifications:
Crew Members
Ability to work outdoors in adverse conditions and on challenging terrain.
Ability to work well with others in a team setting.
Strong desire to learn new skills.
Positive attitude.
Interest in service and community work.
Sense of adventure.

Crew Leaders (in addition to above Member qualifications):
Previous experience in a leadership role
Ability to independently lead a crew of 3-4 members (ages 18-25).
Effective communication skills.
Experience/education in natural resource management, habitat restoration work and/or related fields.
Experience in small engine repair is preferred.
Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.

Requirements: Must be 18-25 years old and be able to perform essential functions of the job including physically strenuous work 40 hours per week. Typical work week is Monday-Thursday (10 hours each day) with other days scheduled as required. Crew Members and Leaders should be available for week-long out of town assignments that involve camping near the work project site. A full term of service must be completed in order to receive the education award. Personal protective equipment provided and required.

Benefits: Crew Members will receive a living stipend of $1140 a month (Crew Leaders: $1550 a month), health insurance, student loan forbearance during the service term, and a post-service AmeriCorps Education Award that may be used for college expenses or to repay qualified student loans. Members and Leaders will have the opportunity to explore career options within the environmental field and to coordinate and complete a week-long service project of their choosing.
