Environment America Seeks Transportation Lobbyist

Environment America: We all want clean air, clean water and open spaces, but it takes independent research and tough-minded advocacy to win concrete results for our environment, especially when powerful interests stand in the way of environmental progress. That's the idea behind Environment America. We are a federation of 29 state environmental groups working towards a cleaner, greener and healthier future. We speak out and take action at the local, state and national levels to improve the quality of our environment and our lives.

Our Washington, DC advocacy office represents the Environment America federation in federal policy matters. Our roots at the state level give Environment America a unique “outside the beltway” perspective on the issues, while our state staff, national field organizers and members across all 50 states provide the grassroots power necessary to enact change at the federal level.

Clean Transportation Vision: Our current transportation practices create two-thirds of America’s oil dependence and nearly one third of our global warming pollution. Thus building a transportation system that provides all Americans clean and efficient choices for getting where they want to go is imperative for our environment and our health. We can curb our dependence on oil, help stop global warming, improve air quality, and put people to work in good, green jobs by making public transit, rail and better biking and walking options cornerstones of our 21st century transportation system.

The Environment America clean transportation advocate will be responsible for moving policies in Congress and through the Administration that increase funding for public transportation and increase the share of our transportation budget that is allocated to transit. At the same time, this program will be helping to reduce vehicle miles traveled, greenhouse gas emissions from the transportation sector, and our dependence on oil. Working with the Department of Transportation, the Environmental Protection Agency and other administrative bodies also has the potential to shift America from a car-dependent culture to one focused on moving people around more cleanly, cheaply, and efficiently.

Job Description: The Federal Clean Transportation Advocate will develop and oversee Environment America’s federal campaign to improve transportation choices and break our dependence on oil. The Transportation Advocate will be responsible for developing and implementing a campaign plan that encompasses both inside-the-beltway lobbying and national field strategies. § Develop and implement a campaign strategy – look for and develop opportunities to advance our agenda. Create a cohesive plan that combines inside advocacy and outside pressure to build power and momentum for policy change.

§ Build a diverse coalition – with the world’s largest and most powerful corporations fighting against improving the environment, our advocate will need to build a diverse and powerful coalition of interests, from labor unions and economists, to local government leaders and the public health community to help balance the playing field.

§ Build the case – research the problems that plague our transportation system and the solutions that are readily available. Our advocate will convey this research through writing reports and fact sheets for public release, letters to decision makers and thought leaders, and position papers to make the case for our policy views.
