POSITION SUMMARY

The Field/Logistics Specialist is a temporary, non-exempt position in EarthCorps.  The primary duty of the position is the oversight of the gear room (camp gear and food) that provides logistical support to crews camping in front and backcountry settings. .Additional duties include providing support to project managers in tool, equipment, and vehicle maintenance as well as with environmental restoration projects.  Assistance in the application of herbicide, onsite supervision of crews, watering, invasive plant removal, stream restoration, and trail work are all likely to occur. The Field/Logistics Specialist is supervised by a Project Manager and coordinates with all members of the Field Operations team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Logistical Support:
•    Coordinate with Supervisor to plan and prep for camping based field projects including:
o    Order, package, and organize food and supplies
o    Ensure that all camping gear is in excellent working condition and if necessary schedule repairs in a timely matter.
o    Pack food, supplies, and equipment into backcountry camping sites
•    Assist in the maintenance and management of field infrastructure (tools, fleet, facilities, equipment)
•    Assist Project Managers in the acquisition, delivery, and use of field supplies including mulch, timber, and cardboard

Project Coordination:
•    Support environmental restoration projects through herbicide application, manual/ mechanical invasive plant removal, installation of erosion control materials and other tasks as assigned
•    Provide on-site coordination with partner agencies/ organizations as needed, along with supervision of the crews in the absence of a Project Manager or crew leader.
•    Instruct environmental restoration skills to young adults
•    Ensure that EarthCorps crews complete projects as agreed upon with Agency Coordinators

Work Supervision: 
•    Maintain discipline and positive crew morale, foster team-work among crew members 
•    Enforce the standards of behavior as well as policies and procedures of EarthCorps and ensure adherence to program goals and mission
•    Lead by example, working alongside corps members 

Training and Instruction: 
•    Plan and implement training and presentations in such areas as: backcountry camping & Leave No Trace ethics, natural resource management, leadership/management skills, project orientation, and first aid and workplace safety,
•    Conduct corps member training in the field.

Communication: 
•    Prepare oral and written reports, which may include daily work logs, work projects summaries, equipment use and maintenance logs, and incident reports.
•    Track camp food and gear budgets.
•    Counsel, motivate or discipline individual crew members as appropriate.
•    Meet regularly with the Field Operations staff and Project Managers.

Program Support:
•    Performs other relevant duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

•    Bachelors degree (received or in progress) in conservation related field, e.g. ecology, forestry, wildlife management, outdoor recreation
•    Demonstrated ability to coordinate and complete simultaneous complex projects in a timely manner
•    Demonstrated ability to work independently in an office, basement, and field setting, maintain self-motivation, and persist in the face of obstacles
•    Demonstrated leadership in a team setting working with staff, volunteers, agency personnel, resource user groups, and others to accomplish conservation/restoration objectives
•    Proven backcountry hiking and camping skills
•    Strong computer and organizational skills
•    Ability to work variable hours, including overnight camping and weekends
•    Ability to work under physically demanding conditions, including cold and wet weather
•    Must be able to lift 50 lbs
•    First Aid training and CPR certification (Wilderness First Aid or higher certification preferred)
•    Valid Washington State Department of Agriculture Pesticide License or willingness to obtain one
•    Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record with an ability to operate full-size vehicles safely
•    Positive attitude and sense of humor

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

•    Knowledge of Pacific Northwest native plants
•    Understanding of Leave No Trace ethics
•    Field experience in environmental restoration, e.g. urban forestry, trail, stream and nearshore
•    Previous experience providing logistical support to crews camping in front or backcountry settings
