Natural Resource Intern (AmeriCorps National Direct)
Two major deserts, the Mojave and Sonoran, meet within the boundaries of this 794,000 acre natural area, Joshua Tree National Park. The desert ecosystem is truly remarkable, harboring some of the greatest biological diversity in North America. Joshua Tree National Park has 6 distinct mountain ranges, 5 fan palm oases, over 800 vascular plant species, the federally threatened desert tortoise, many species of cactus, as well as its namesake, the Joshua Tree. Joshua Tree National Park is considered to have excellent rock climbing with more than 6,000 climbs and 500 bouldering problems. Much of this Park is federally designated wilderness, allowing for many opportunities to hike into untouched landscapes.
You will restore disturbed sites (revegetation, vertical mulching, restored sites); assist with exotic plant eradication; assist nursery manager with plant propagation and nursery maintenance; conduct botanical surveys; monitor restored and burned areas; communicate with the public about ecological issues including fire and restoration; organize and maintain databases (including GIS); write reports; assist with other Resource Division projects, as needed.
