Since 1997, Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie has been restoring the tallgrass prairie ecosystem on 19,000 acres of former Army lands near Wilmington, Illinois
Duties focus on activities that contribute to prairie restoration including maintenance and expansion of native seed production (planting, weeding, watering), invasive plant control, seed collection, prairie management, and monitoring (data collection). There will be limited learning experiences concerning prairie ecology and native plant identification. Duties will also require use of herbicides to control invasive plant species, primarily using backpack sprayers. Use of some power tools (riding mowers, brush mowers, weed whips, rototillers, soil augers) also required.Required work clothing includes work boots (with ankle protection), long-sleeved shirt, trousers, sun hat, and rain gear; other protective gear is provided. Bring lunch daily; no food service at work site.
