The largest expanse of wilderness east of the Mississippi River, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is an ancient heavily forested mountain complex that forms one of the most spectacular areas of the southern Appalachian Mountains. It is the most heavily visited National Park and is the ancestral land of the Cherokee. The park's natural history collection consists of over 55,000 natural specimens, including a passenger pigeon, a baby bear, and the largest Hellbender ever collected. In addition to prehistoric and Cherokee remains the cultural and archival collections include historic images, historical documents and many historic items such as furniture, textiles, and tools.
The intern will assist the park’s museum technician in the management of the park’s natural history collection. Duties will include cataloging, inventorying, labeling and rehousing of museum objects. The majority of the work will be with the parks wet specimens. The intern will also assist in museum housekeeping, database management, and integrated pest management. The intern will work mainly with the natural history collection, but may also have an opprotunity to work with parks cultural and archival collections.
