Migratory Bird Specialist
Avon Park Air Force Range is a 106,000 acre range located in central Florida. It has been used since 1941 for aircraft and weapons training for all armed services. It is also an important natural area, playing a key role in preserving biodiversity. Approximately 162 bird species occur within the range. Summers are very warm and humid, winters are mild and dry. Temperatures range from 95 degrees plus in summer to 45-50 degree lows in winter. Nearby communities of Avon Park and Sebring provide basic shopping and amenities while Orlando and Tampa (each 1 1/2 hour driving time) provide more diverse cultural and social opportunities.
Monitor migratory and resident bird species by surveying preexisting plots established in representative habitats beginning at dawn; identify bird species by sight and sound and record an estimated distance from the plots for calculations of bird density and species diversity; compile data and analysis; develop a network of local volunteers to assist in field data collection. Check on raptor nesting locations periodically. Search out rare bird species and record information on habitat, life history, etc. Must have valid driver's license. Must have personal vehicle for transportation to and from work site. Must be willing to undergo background check for access to Air Force computer network and for use of Government vehicle. Must be able to identify common bird species by sight and sound. Will be involved in data entry and analysis therefore basic knowledge of spreadsheet data bases is desired. Will be involved with local groups and volunteers, hence, must be able to work cooperatively with diverse groups and individuals. Must have sufficient stamina to work in a hot humid climate. Must be a self-starter, able to work independently with a minimum of supervision.
