Invasive Species and Wildlife Technician Internship

Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge, located 4 miles northwest of Lago Vista, Texas.

Primary duties of this internship will include conducting surveys of exotic invasive plants on the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge, implementing mechanical and chemical control measure for invasive grass and tree species, and tracking such activities with GPS and GIS capabilities.  Additional duties of this position will include assisting with feral hog control, surveys for the endangered golden-cheeked warbler and black-capped vireos, and native habitat restoration activities.  Interns may be asked to perform other various duties around the Refuge as well.These intern positions require strenuous work that will be conducted outside in weather conditions including high heat and humidity in habitat that is steep and includes thorns, ticks, chiggers, venomous animals, and other inherent risks.  Interns will be working with chemicals and all personal protecitive equipment and safety gear will be provided and is expected to be used.Chemical control measures that will be used during the internship will include spot treatment and broadcast treatment of herbicides from ATV and UTV mounted sprayers and also the use of backpack and spot sprayers.  Mechanical control will include the cutting and girdling of invasive trees.  Feral hog control will include  trapping and euthanizing feral hogs.
