Redwood National and State Parks is located in the extreme northwestern corner of California. Summer weather can be cool and foggy, along the coast or warm and sunny inland. Interns will work primarily outdoors in a California coastal grassland setting. Although US Hwy 101 runs the length of the parks, this is a fairly remote location.
You will assist with our long-term program to control exotic plants. This project focuses on control of invasive Harding grass using chemical control. You would primarily be working in steep grasslands, carrying a back pack sprayer up and down the hills seeking and spraying harding grass in known locations.Other work may include control of Scotch Broom, English Ivy, European Beach Grass, Cape Ivy, and more. You may conduct invasive plant control work in different ecosystems such as old-growth redwood forest, beach, prairies and roadsides, however THE PRIMARY WORK WILL INVOLVE SPRAYING HARDING GRASS with a glyphosate-based herbicide. This activity is arduous, and will be conducted in all weather conditions, but it is extremely rewarding to actively participate in on the ground restoration on a daily basis. You will use GPS units to navigate, and record and enter treatment data into a database as necessary.
