Hume Lake Ranger District of Giant Sequoia National Monument/Sequoia National Forest
Intern will learn about conservation education and interpretive naturalist jobs through formal and hands-on training on the Hume Lake Ranger District of Giant Sequoia National Monument and Sequoia National Forest. The site is adjacent to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. The student will conduct research and develop interpretive and conservation education activities for forest visitors and school groups. The intern will also present programs both on and off the district at campgrounds, along trails and at youth camps, among other settings. Some of the work will be at a desk working on developing props, brochures and other materials, and record keeping. The intern will be expected to work evenings and weekends, especially Thursdays through Saturdays, and sometimes Sundays since that is when the majority of visitors are on site.Each intern will be provided with the basic safety and orientation training regarding Forest Service work such as use of government vehicles and handheld radios, as well as the missions of the federal land management agencies. In addition, they will be offered Certified Interpretive Guide (National Association for Interpretation), and Leave No Trace trainer certification (Leave No Trace, Inc.) courses. They will also receive on-the-job training and coaching from their supervisor who is an NAI certified interpretive planner and trainer.In their day-to-day job they will be learning how to create and present interpretive and conservation education programs, as well as non-personal media such as recreation opportunity guides (brochures), and web page materials.Interns must have their own personal vehicle because the work and living area is about a 1 hour drive from the nearest town and grocery store. The housing is at Pinehurst Barracks, designed for up to 10 employees to share a common living and cooking area, with two people sharing a bedroom.
