- How is my contribution dollar used?
- At SCA, about 86 cents of every dollar you contribute goes to the direct cost of our programs, which is a very high percentage. About five cents goes for the cost of fundraising and the remaining nine cents goes to cover the cost of administering the organization.
- Where does SCA support come from?
- The National Park Service (and other agency partners) requires SCA to raise funds from the public to match the grants they make to us for the cost of our volunteer programs. Generally, they pay 77 percent of the costs to us and we have to raise the other 23 percent. That 23% comes from people like you, foundations, clubs, and corporations.
- How does SCA rank among other nonprofit organizations?
- SCA’s fiscal prudence ranks us among the top of America’s charities, earning us an A- rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy, the highest 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, and SCA meets all standards set by the Council of Better Business Bureau Philanthropic Advisory Service.
- May I see a copy of SCA’s Annual Report and IRS Form 990?
- Both the Annual Report and IRS Form 990 are available.
- If SCA has been doing so much for conservation for five decades, why have I never heard of you before?
- National Parks and National Forests, and other places we work, know about us, but for the last 50 years, we have made the choice to spend your money on placing volunteers! SCA is the “best kept secret in the conservation movement,” and it’s only in the last few years that our story has been receiving wider attention.
- What is Sponsorship?
- Depending on your level of support, you will receive a letter either from the leader of a high school crew or from a volunteer. Your support can be anonymous, so we can forward your letter, but in most cases the volunteer receives a stamped envelope with your name and address. They then write you directly to describe their experiences in the field!
- What does it take to be a Sponsor?
- You can become a Sponsor either with an annual contribution at or beyond $250 or by authorizing a monthly or quarterly gift totaling $120 to be deducted from your bank account or charged to your credit card through our Partners in Conservation program.
- What is Crew Sponsorship?
- Recognizing that not everyone can give at the $250 level, we have established a program for those who give at the $100 level or who are first-time donors of $25 or more. Crew Sponsors receive a letter from one of our crew leaders about the experience of 6-10 high school students working in one of America’s treasured parks.
- I’m on a fixed income, but want to do more than my checks allow. Are there other ways to give?
- There are many ways to support SCA that allow donors to take advantage of underutilized assets (like low yielding but appreciated securities, life insurance policies that are no longer needed, or retirement plans that can be put to use for charitable purposes). Some SCA giving programs even allow donors to increase their own income stream while helping to sustain SCA’s conservation work and generating income tax deductions. Please don’t hesitate to contact Hugh Montgomery, SCA’s Director of Planned Giving, for a variety of ways to give.
