Preschoolers Do Not Scare Me

[SCA Massachusetts is currently teaching environmental education to all ages in their local schools. – Editor]

We walked by whispers down the hallway,
“They’re here! They’re here!”
Wide-eyed with butterflies,
first glance at my winter.

Preschoolers do not scare me.
Line making.
Run and holler screaming bloody murder.
Futile imaginary boundaries.
Next, a tree party.

Preschoolers do not scare me.
Here beavers talk.
Moose sing.
Raccoons have Brooklyn accents.
Passion for the Earth
glints in eyes.

Preschoolers do not scare me.
Sometimes my alarm clock goes off.
Sometimes other peoples’ scare me.
Wake up halfway through my coffee fix
daily instructions in Sharpie on my hand,
soon to be showtime!

Preschoolers do not scare me.
Ridiculous tales of the day
bounce around with cooking smells.
Snowballs with personalities,
anti-snow eating campaigns,
The feeling when you ignite a spark.

Preschoolers do not scare me.
They used to.
But they’re kinda awesome now.
