SCA Celebrates MLK Day

Each year, SCA Pittsburgh organizes a community-wide event at Schenley Park Ice Ring to bring people together in honor of the life and work of Martin Luther King.  This year saw people get acquainted, help each other learn to skate (or at least not fall down), and make an inspiring mural to honor King. “Whether getting thoroughly sticky toasting marshmallows or dancing to the beat of Pitt’s African Drumming Ensemble, it was hard to find a face that didn’t wear a smile,” SCA Pittsburgh reports.

SCA Oakland

"Pouring raining greeted us as we woke up on Martin Luther King Jr Day. The bay waters were hidden in a cloud of fog as we drove over the bridge to Marin County. But about 50 SCA faces were peeking out of rain gear during the welcome circle at Muir Woods National Monument. Joined by the Golden Gate Parks Conservancy trail crew, we started on our mile hike through the world's most famous grove of virgin redwoods, arriving eventually at the spot for the SCA bucket brigade. We were to pass buckets of rocks uphill so the trail crew could restore the hillside trail. The group spread out and began passing. Buckets up. Buckets down. The project needed to get done before February when restrictions on the amount of noise in the park go in affect to protect nesting spotted owls. It didn’t stop raining until the closing circle back at the parking lot. But we were used to it by then" .

SCA DC

A team of 80+ SCA DC volunteers put in a highly productive day of service on Kingman & Heritage Islands to honor Martin Luther King’s commitment to service, removing invasive species and cleaning up man-made debris on both islands.

“It was great to see a good turnout and even better to see so many SCA alumni who came to the event. There was an entire crew from Greenbelt Park from summer’09. We also had the Maryland Conservation Corps as well as 27 students from Hyde Leadership Academy."

SCA Seattle

MLK weekend, the SCA Seattle program kicked off it's program year with the All Corps Retreat, where first year members participated in their first SCA event and met SCA staff and returning members. We went to Gold Creek Lodge in Woodinville, WA for a weekend of introductions, work projects (planting and building steps at the Lodge), skill workshops (plant I.D., invasive species removal, fire building, Leave No Trace ethics, etc.), and games! The whole event was planned and led by our returning members, the Old Faithfuls. With many members stating the weekend included a lot of learning and fun, we consider the weekend to have been a HUGE success!
