Habitat Inventory Technician Intern
Located in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, the refuge encompasses nearly 46,000 acres and is one of over 500 refuges within the Service’s National Wildlife Refuge System. The refuge was established in 1939 to restore and maintain the rapidly diminishing longleaf pine/wiregrass ecosystem. On the refuge, rolling beds of sandy soils, extensive longleaf pine forest, thirty man-made lakes, and numerous small creeks and tributaries serve as habitat to support more than 190 species of birds, 42 species of mammals, 41 species of reptiles, 25 species of amphibians, and over 750 plant species. The refuge employs various management techniques, including prescribed burning, forest thinning, mechanical and chemical vegetation management to maintain this ecosystem.
Endangered Species Habitat Inventory Technician Internships (2) Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge is seeking two (2) Habitat Inventory Technicians (internship) to collect forest inventory data such as basal area, species, diameter, height, hardwood midstory, and groundcover data using GPS and Tcruiser template and software. Tree age (through coring) will be determined in stands where no age has been documented. This data is needed to complete a spatially explicit Foraging Habitat Analysis for the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker (RCW). Carolina Sandhills NWR has the largest RCW population on US Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) lands and is part of a designated Secondary Core Recovery Population (SC Sandhills). Technicians will concentrate efforts in uninventoried areas of naturally occurring longleaf pine and survey an average of 10 points (1/10th acre plots) per stand in each compartment and with a goal of completing 25 points per day.
