Project Leader: Veterans Historic Preservation Team

Program Dates: April 4, 2013 - August 5, 2013

Project Description: “America’s cultural and historical resources are at risk.  Across our great country, hundreds of thousands of cultural resource sites, ranging from Native American sacred sites to battlefields of the Revolutionary and Civil wars to fire lookouts built by the CCC in the 1930s are at risk.”

This project will engage post 9-11 US military veterans, Student Conservation Association (SCA), the U.S. Forest Service, and volunteers in historic preservation will be working at three sites: Thornburg Farm in Uwharrie National Forest, NC; Forest Lodge in Chequamegon National Forest, WI; and Birches Picnic Shelter in Chippewa National Forest, MN.  As a Project Leader you will work with Military veterans, broadening their skills through learning historic preservation techniques to include carpentry, roofing, log work, masonry and other trades skills that they will be able to apply to their personal and professional lives. The Veterans Historic Preservation Team will consist of seven Military veterans and will spend three to four weeks in each location before moving on to the next work site in an SCA provided vehicle.  The majority of time the teams will be tenting in campgrounds near the work sites.  This position requires the ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, while being exposed to the elements. The Leader must be able to lift and/or move 40 pounds or more on a regular basis.

Primary Responsibilities:

Team Managing:

  • Lead and manage work outcomes and team dynamics
  • Facilitate team operations: food planning/purchasing, tools & equipment, vehicles, housing arrangements
  • Actively manage project team in the field to mitigate the risk of hazards

Technical Advising:

  • Assist in the technical skills training of corps members
  • Manage the quality & technique of work performed
  • Promote leadership development within team and evaluate success & potential

Program Administration:

  • Communicate with SCA field support staff as required
  • Complete required program reporting and documentation
  • Manage budget and necessary purchasing for team and project 
  • Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures
  • Work with HistoriCorps and Forest Service staff to accomplish project goals

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • Minimum 2 years prior experience supervising a mature team averaging 25 years old or older in an  outdoor setting 
  • Current Wilderness First Responder or Aid/CPR certification
  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience
  • Strong MSOffice and database skills a must  computer skills 
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work and live in the outdoors exposed to the elements for extended periods of time
  • Experience using power/hand tools
  • Previous experience working with veterans preferred
  • Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required 
  • Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards

Compensation:

  • Salary starting at $545 per week, paid biweekly with some seasonal benefits
  • All tools and camping gear will be provided with the exception of personal items
  • Transportation to and from the site locations at the beginning and end of season
