Project Leader: Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Corps Team

The Student Conservation Association (SCA), America’s #1 conservation service organization seeks an experienced; quality oriented outdoor leaders to supervise a team of 4 corps members who will be responsible for implementing green storm water best management practices (BMPs) in the Marquette Park Lagoon in Indiana.

The Northwest Indiana Regional Development Authority (RDA) will partner with the City of Gary/Gary Storm water Management District and Student Conservation Association (SCA) to install BMP’s in the lagoon which has been impacted by sedimentation and nutrient runoff from storm water outflows originating in the Miller neighborhood of Gary, Indiana.

Program Dates:      April 8th through January 1st 2014  - (10 months for the Project Leader – members work for 8 months)

Responsibilities:

Crew Manager

  • Lead and manage work outcomes and crew dynamics
  • Facilitate team operations: food planning/purchasing, tools & equipment, vehicles
  • Actively manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment
  • Assist and train corps members in the conservation skills necessary for the project

Technical Advisor

  • Supervise and assist the work skills training of corps members
  • Manage the quality of the BMP’s being implemented
  • Actively manage project/member risk to maintain a safe work environment
  • Promote leadership development within team and evaluate success & potential

Partnership Representative

  • Manage relationship with agency partner
  • Work collaboratively with agency on program logistics
  • Ensure successful and timely completion of work project

Program Administrator

  • Assist SCA Program Manager to complete required program reporting and documentation
  • Assist SCA Program Manager in budget management and reconciliation
  • Ensure compliance with all SCA Risk Management policies & procedures
  • Represent SCA in a positive manner

Qualifications:

  • Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
  • Must be authorized to work in the US
  • Previous experience with Storm Water management
  • Wilderness First Responder/CPR certification required
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, strong work ethic are required
  • Self-starter ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Have working knowledge of safely operating power and hand-tools
  • Experience managing a program budget preferred
  • Experience working with diverse populations and workforce development type programs is preferred
  • Able to carry heavy loads up to 50 pounds and be able to work in outdoor environment exposed to the elements.
  • Completion of SCA Project Leader Orientation and experience leading SCA teams is    preferred
  • Must have a personal vehicle
  • Valid driver’s license and MVR that meets SCA standards required
  • Ability to meet SCA’s criminal background check standards
