Southcentral Alaska
Cook Inlet Aquaculture Association is working on a northern pike investigations project in the Susitna River Valley, in Southcentral Alaska. Objectives of the study are 1) determining northern pike seasonal movements, physical habitat, and water quality parameters 2) investigate effective methods to mitigate loss of salmon habitat and production areas through targeted northern pike harvest goals in priority lakes 3) conduct beaver dam surveillence and mitigation of barriers to fish passage and 4) develop and assess the ability of NEPTUN barrier technology to influence pike movement. Interns will be assisting with everything from field preparation for the project to data collection. All crews live on-site for the duration of the program at one of two locations in the Susitna River Valley. All locations are remote, with floatplane only access. Interns will receive training in wilderness first aid/cpr, bear safety, gun safety, use of a variety of fisheries sampling gear, and data collection procedures. Round trip flight, food, and housing is provided.
