The Sawtooth National Recreation Area (Sawtooth NRA) is located within the 2.1 million acre Sawtooth National Forest, about 85 miles north of Twin Falls. The Sawtooth NRA consists of over 750,000 acres of protected land in one of Idaho's most scenic areas. The area contains many jagged mountains, hundreds of high alpine lakes and the headwaters of four rivers including the Salmon. The U.S. Congress established the Sawtooth NRA in 1972 with the passage of Public Law 92-400 which sought to preserve and protect the Area's "natural, scenic, historic, pastoral, and fish and wildlife values and to provide for the enhancement of the recreation values associated therewith." Congress also created the 217,664 acres Sawtooth Wilderness in 1972. Recreation opportunities are prevalent throughout the area especially fishing and boating during the spring and summer with many campgrounds along popular lakes, rivers and streams. You will conduct stream electrofishing surveys to enumerate fish populations (75%), conduct stream and riparian habitat surveys (10%), participate in miscellaneous field work (10%), and perform computer data entry (5%). Interns will work 4-10 hour days (Monday to Thursday) each week. Monitoring will require working in remote locations in all types of weather. Project will also require hiking over long distances (10 miles per day) carrying equipment weighing up to 30 lbs over rough terrain. Overnight camping over several days may be required in some locations. Candidates should have the ability to operate four wheel drive vehicles on rough roads.
