Positions will work on fisheries assessment projects conducted by USFWS Anchorage Field Office. Projects located in Matanuska-Susitna Valley near Wasilla. Projects include Big Lake Juvenile Sockeye Assessment, Big Lake Northern Pike Radio Telemetry, Assessment of Perched Culverts in Mat-Su. Project work will be conducted as part of USFWS field crews staffed by seasonal technicians. Work involves operation of fyke nets to capture emigrating juvenile sockeye, identification to species and sampling juvenile salmon for length and tags, capture of northern pike by gillnet and angling, radio tagging and tracking of northern pike, sampling of northern pike for stomach contents and biological data, collection, sampling of select habitat parameters such as substrate and gradient, and sampling for resident juvenile salmon with electrofishing and minoow traps. All field work conducted out of field (tent) camps. Work long hours (usually 6 days/week) outdoors in inclement weather and field conditions. Under supervision of Crew Leader and specified in project investigation plan, will: conduct fish and habitat sampling, collect and record data, maintain equipment, and assist in camp duties.
