Fisheries Intern

This position will work out of the Holy Cross Ranger District in Minturn Colorado. Holy Cross is one of seven ranger districts located in the 2.3 million acre White River National Forest. Holy Cross is located in the Western Rocky Mountains and ranges in elevation between 7,000 and 14,000 feet. Large portions of three wilderness areas also lie within the district boundaries. There is a large amount of outdoor recreational activities in the area including, boating, climbing, hiking/backpacking, fishing, horseback riding, and mountain biking. The intern will be housed in Minturn which is a small town with a resident population of around 2,000. The town contains restaurants and bars and a small service station. Major groceries stores can be found a few minutes away in Vail, Avon, or Edwards. All of these towns can be reached by bus from Minturn throughout the day. Housing is shared occupancy/bunkhouse style with full kitchens and bathrooms located within walking distance to the duty station.

DutiesThe intern will assist fisheries biologists in ongoing stream health, fish, amphibian, and macroinvertebrate surveys.  This is a field position that will require the ability to walk long distances (up to 20 miles a day) carrying a backpack of up to 50 lbs.  The position involves working in and around streams, rivers and other aquatic habitats.  Comfort with wading and walking in water and on slippery uneven terrain is a must.  Field sites vary from roadside to overnight backcountry locations.  Major duties will include assisting with physical stream habitat surveys, fish electro-shocking surveys, and macroinvertebrate collection.
