FIREMON Technical Support

This page has been created to provide documents, cheat sheets, and field guides to aid in the collection of FIREMON data in the field.

Botany Resources

Species composition is undoubtably the most time consuming method in the FIREMON package.  It is very rare that data collection teams will be able to identify all of the species rooted in a given plot.  The following documents have been created to aid in the learning of the botany skills required to collect species composition data.

Field Cheat Sheets

Given the fact that there are so many codes and lists to remember in the FIREMON methods we have created a series of cheat sheets that can be used in the field.  These cheatsheets should be printed on write-in-the-rain paper or printed on plain paper and laminated to ensure durability.

Food for the Field

Every field crew needs to eat!  We are no different.  Through the years SCA interns have put together some great recipes and have gained a great deal of knowledge on cooking for groups.  Below are some downloadable cookbooks and menu resources.

Wildland Fire and Fire Ecology References

The topic of wildland fire and fire ecology is an extremely diverse study area.  We have gathered a list of helpful resources for field crews to take advantage of.  Please feel free to contact us if there are resources you use and have determined to be helpful.

Webpages:

E.V. Komarek Fire Ecology Database
This database can help you find citations to a broad collection of fire ecology literature, searchable by author, keyword, title, or name of book or periodical. There is a thesaurus to help you locate keywords. Note that this database will not retrieve the actual article for you; for that you need to go to the Valley Library catalog.
Fire Effects Information (FEIS)
A searchable database of information about fire effects on plant and wildlife species. Also, links to comprehensive publications (PDF files) about fire effects on flora, fauna, soils, water, and air quality. Developed by the USDA-FS Fire Sciences Lab in Missoula.
FIREHouse
A regional clearinghouse for research on fire and fuels management relevant to public lands management in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Alaska.
Fire Research and Management Exchange System (FRAMES)
FRAMES is a systematic method of exchanging information and transferring technology between wildland fire researchers, managers, and other stakeholders. Administered by the University of Idaho's College of Natural Resources.
Firewise
This website is sponsored by a consortium of federal and state agencies responsible for wildland fire management. Its purpose is to help homeowners and communities to lower the risk of wildfire, through better planning, design and fuel reduction.
Global Fire Initiative (The Nature Conservancy)
The goal of the Nature Conservancy (TNC) is conservation of biodiversity, and they recognize the threat posed by altered fire regimes. They sponsor research, training, public education, and policy-related activities in 14 countries.
InciWeb (Incident Information System)
An interagency system that provides a central source of information on wildland fire incidents for public affairs specialists and the general public. Includes pictures, maps, and current information on active fires, including those that have been designated as "fire use fires."
Introduction to Fire Behavior
Influences of topography, fuels, and weather are explained using text, graphic images, and animation. Produced by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research. You must register to use this site, but it is free of charge.
Joint Fire Science Program
JFSP is a partnership of 6 federal agencies (USDA FS, BIA, BLM, NPS, USFWS, USGS), supporting research into wildland fire and fuels management.
Missoula Fire Sciences Lab
The world's leading facility for research on wildland fire. Three research work units work together to provide the science and technology needed by managers to understand fire and smoke behavior and fire effects to better manage the forests and rangelands of the U.S. and around the world.
National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC)
This site has a wealth of information about current fires and wildfire statistics.Check out the "Prevention and Education" links (left-hand column). The "Image Portal" contains thousands of excellent photos pertaining to every aspect of wildfire.
National Park Service Fire Management Program
Another treasure trove of information about fire history, fire ecology, prescribed fire and current research. Click on "Fire Program" tab to locate information on fire ecology. There is another tab that links to fire management information for specific parks throughout the country.
Oregon Forestland-Urban Interface Fire Protection Act
This Act, commonly known as Senate Bill 360, was passed by the Oregon legislature in 1997. It defines the interface, and establishes standards for property owners, in order to mitigate fire hazards and risks. This page appears to be somewhat out of date.
Plants Database
If you are looking for information about a particular plant and can't find what you are looking for in FEIS, you might try this useful database. It covers vascular plants, mosses, and lichens. Hosted by the Natural Resource Conservation Service.
Prescribed Fire Information for Private Forest Managers (Southeastern US)
Part of the "Private Forest Management Team" website, hosted by Auburn University, and supported by the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, The Alabama Forestry Association, and Alabama River Woodlands, Inc. Includes a lot of good information about wildfire and prescribed fire, focusing on the southeastern U.S.
Smoke and Fire
Produced by a partnership between the US Forest Service and the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington. Weather predictions, fire danger in the Pacific Northwest.
Southern Fire Portal
A regional clearinghouse of information on fire science. Part of FRAMES (Fire Research and Management Exchange System).
USDA Forest Service - Fire and Aviation Management
An extensive set of links to regional research labs and other information about fire on our national forests.
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Fire Management
The FWS fire program is responsible for protecting nearly 73 million burnable acres; many of these are small coastal and urban tracts with extensive wildland-urban interface areas along the East, West, and Gulf Coasts and in the Midwest.
Western Forest Fire Research Center
Hosted by Colorado State University, this site focuses primarily on the Rockies.
Wilderness Fire Research Program
The Aldo Leopold Wilderness Research Institute is a federal institute that conducts research aimed at understanding natural fire regimes and restoring or maintaining fire as a process in wildland ecosystems.
