Located in Southcentral Alaska, the Kenai Peninsula is rich with outdoor recreational opportunities, scenic landscapes and supports an abundance of wildlife. The Kenai Fish and Wildlife Field Office and Kenai National Wildlife Refuge are located between the cities of Kenai and Soldotna, which have a combined population of about 12,000 people.
The intern will implement and improve an established aquatic education program (Adopt-A-Stream) in local schools along with a local non-profit organization (Kenai Watershed Forum); participate in community fairs and outreach/education activities; assist biologists with local field projects and lab work or data entry; serve as assistant coordinator with Kenai National Wildlife Refuge environmental education program.During fall, winter and spring the intern will teach the Adopt-A-Stream program to students grades K-6; organize and facilitate K-6 grade field trips; assist with homeschool and area classroom programs; create and evaluate environmental education materials; assist with special events, activities and other EE/Outreach programs (90%); assist biologists with local field projects and lab work or data entry (10%). During the summer the intern will facilitate summer camp programs, assist with special events, and develop and provide nature/fitness walks and programs (90%); assist biologists with local field projects and lab work or data entry (10%).
