Longfellow House–Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site (NHS) is located in a
historic residential neighborhood of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is adjacent to Boston’s
large and active metropolitan community where many cultural, educational, and recreational
opportunities as well as other amenities are available.
The SCA applicant selected for this internship will gain valuable experience in historic site programming and operations. Specifically, the intern will have opportunities to conduct historical research essential for interpreting site significance; prepare interpretive publications based on primary and secondary source research; facilitate tours of the historic Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site; support curriculum-based programming; facilitate summer family programming; help develop, pilot and evaluate a new Jr. Ranger program for young visitors; and assist with planning and implementation of special events (summer music and poetry series, Cambridge Discovery Days, revolutionary war re-enactments). The intern will work in partnership with the NPS Supervisory Park Ranger, Education Specialist, Lead Park Ranger, and park partners to plan and implement special events throughout the 24-week internship, and will assist with programming and events offered at two other historic sites managed in tandem with Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site (John F. Kennedy National Historic Site, Frederick law Olmsted National Historic Site). Weekend work is required June-Oct. and on occasion in Nov.
