This Alumni Reunion and Celebration included a work project to complete restoration in a unique section of the desert, a presentation on the successes of the DRC across the desert region, during its seven year history, an archaeological tour of the area, a special honor for our BLM partners and supporters, and a celebration of SCA’s 50th year.
In 1999, the DRC began with just one six-member crew designated to restore areas of Southern California’s wilderness that had been damaged by illegal off-highway vehicle use. Since that time, the Corps has grown into nearly 50 members working in teams to conduct restoration efforts and protect wildlife habitat in seven locations across the desert region.
In collaboration with the Bureau of Land Management, the DRC has completed restoration on 226 acres of damaged desert land and protected 3.6 million acres of California wilderness. These teams have logged nearly 60,000 service hours, all the while educating communities, collecting data, writing reports and creating a lasting legacy of protection and stewardship in their wake.
