- Green Teens - Yuning Liu
- Green Teens is a program that focuses on empowering teenagers through environmental education. The program focuses on two “action frontiers” to reach out to teenagers: media and schools. It hopes to raise up the next generation of adults who are passionate about the environment and who have the will and political power to effect change.
- Pinnacle Organization - Christina Harview
- This contest submission is a concept created to form an organization that will connect multiple age levels of youths in a common goal of conservation. The concept is a broad one for the purpose of being flexible to any conservation situation. The Pinnacle Organization will mold leaders, engage youths in various levels of government participation, science investigation, and service to their communities.
- Center Adoption and Collaborative Learning - Katie Bonebright
- Environmental education centers should be used more in school education. Continue to bring environmental topics into education to promote beneficial environmental practices. Support students to make a difference for the environment.
- Youth Initiative Corps - Benjamin Long
- Far too many people in this world have little of no reagard for their impact on our planet. My solution would have the creation of the Youth Initiative Corps. The Youth Initiative Corps is a group of young persons dedicated to action with the cause of combating environmental apathy by enticing people to volunteer in their local state parks.
- Project Change - Megan Crowley
- Project Change is a program that is designed for communities to lessen their environmental footprints. It is flexible and can be personalized for any community. It especially emphasises youth education/involvement and change beginning in the home to induce change throughout the world.
- Paper and Global Warming - Rohit Umashankar
- Preventing the use of paper by switching to technology such as computers reduces the demand of paper. Less demand for paper reduces deforestation, which allows more carbon dioxide to be absorbed by trees from the atmosphere, reducing global warming. By planting crops near emission plants, more carbon dioxide is absorbed readily and the food can be given to the hungry people through the United Nations World Food Program
- ConserveNation - Shai Barak
- ConserveNation encourages environmental awareness in both young people and families by having a mentor-led program of nature education and exploration for students year-round. It aims to simultaneously encourage an understanding of the natural world while informing students and, through students, their families about environmental concerns. This inexpensive program will continue to remain effective by working towards an ideal cycle of leadership and inspiration to lead.
- ENVIROnetwork - Rocco Arena
- Proposed is a website that will further envrionmental change through community networking. The site is designed to be user freindly in essence and design. The system, when fully developed, will give the average citizen the opportunity to contact their neighbors and representatives and will offer a window to a vast amount of information on how change what we’ve always wanted, but have previously hesitated to because of time restraint.
- Continuing the Naturalist Tradition - Elana Garfinkle
- This presentation provides an outline of a creative new program to become a nationally certified naturalist, while simultaneously proposing an advancement of conservation techniques that were once prevalent in our past. This proposal will spark an interest in people to conserve the environment with a ‘hands-on’ approach, creating an affinity for nature within the individual while becoming nationally recognized and certified as a naturalist. This will lead to a new, knowledgeable generation of naturalists that will implement skills learned from the national naturalist certification program in addressing rising global environmental challenges. To become an excellent naturalist, one must acquire personal growth, knowledge, development skills, and certain qualities of thought. Within this project, I have outlined ten general characteristics, or ways of thinking that a naturalist should exhibit or possess that will be elaborated upon if a national naturalist certification program is implemented.
- Teens for Energy Conservation in Schools - Millie Rosen
- Teens for Energy Conservation in Schools: A plan for a national organization of teenagers who are committed to making our schools more energy-conserving. TECS will focus on a school wide campaign on conservation methods. Members will also research and present the principal and superintendent with a detailed plan of energy-saving strategies. Across the country, members will monitor energy use and conservation methods in their own schools and compile it in a national database online.
- Sea Turtle Conservation: A Proposal - Alicia Ward
- Every one of the seven species of sea turtle swimming the oceans today is facing extinction as a result of human pressures on the environment. Many young people all over the world are volunteering or working with sea turtle conservation projects, and it is this group of young people that has the ability to inspire everyone to engage in sea turtle conservation in their own way. I propose the creation of a website to connect these young people and provide them with the materials they need to go out in their communities and start a global movement to effect real change.
- U.S. Dependence on Naughty Children Stocking Stuffers - Jessica Frint
- Fossil fuels, especially coal, are needed as an energy source. As such, we have an obligation to reduce CO2 emissions, and develop clean coal technology.
- Being Less Bad is No Good - Elizabeth Kallusky
- This slide show demonstrates that we\’re in need of a paradigm shift when it comes to our land ethic. It presents practical solutions to achieving a sustainable \’cradle to cradle\’ system. This presentation is intended to go beyond this contest, content in it should be shared with as many people as soon as possible.
- HBU Waters Below the Surface - Sonja Norwood
- This is a development of a new bioassay to determine the level of pollution in water. The main objective of the study was to determine the correlation between pollution and life prevalent in the water samples. This experiment can be done on a smaller scale by lower grade elevels, even children in elementary schools, and is a more accurate and safe approach opposed to a chemical assay.
- Water Conservation Practices in the American Southwest - Candice Adkins
- Our generation can change water use in our every day lives. By consuming less water in our household and consuming water-friendly agricultural products, we can cut down our water sources. Our generation will reach out to policy makers, farmers, and our communities to encourage water-conscious lifestyles and a more sustainable future in the American Southwest.
- Overpopulation: ‘Too Much of a Good Thing’ - Courtney Rockafellow
- Overpopulation can be directly or indirectly linked to many environmetal, economic, and global issues. In order to solve this problem, we must set an example as the United States, and provide the means for undeveloped countries to move toward a more sustainable future.
- Project Green City - Laura Wood
- I envision sending crews, similar to the SCA program, to major cities across the United States, working with city planners, mayors, leaders to plan green projects and improve the efficiency of the city. These projects would include educational programs for children and adults about how to reduce their carbon footprint and active participation in city initiatives and policies for green buildings, public transportation, recycling programs and city beautification. Communication between cities would also be promoted through the acceptance of college student interns who would serve as ambassadors, reporting progress and management plans.
- SPLASH! - Alyse Egner
- SPLASH! focuses on positively impacting water-related issues facing communities and habitats across the nation. SPLASH! is an action-centered recognition program for water resource problem solving and collective involvement. It fosters advocacy at all ages through progressive levels of participation and education through action.
- The Student Conservation Club - Kelly Engle
- A website devoted to creating clubs in high schools. The site will allow high schools sign up for help in designing greener schools.
- Plastics in the Ocean - Amanda Kahn
- Plastic has become a staple in many facets of society; however, much of that plastic is not disposed of properly and instead ends up in streams, rivers, and ultimately the ocean. I propose an educational program, the Ocean Plastics Program (OPP), which will guide undergraduate students through stages of plastic from production to disposal, with a focus on sea life and the dangers they face from plastic. The program will serve to both inspire its participants as well as provide them the knowledge necessary to forge creative solutions.
- The UnGarbage Crew - Joanna Hoang
- Create a working recycling program at each high school. The students will then mentor middle school students and so on to elementary students.
- Charging The PHEV Movement - Christopher Thomas
- While hydrogen fuel cells are on the way, they still have a yet to go. In the meantime, something needs to be done to reduce auto emissions as we wait for the big shift to hydrogen to fully take place. I propose that we spread awareness of and hopefully ignite a demand for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEV’s) in order to provide a ‘emissions cushion’ between now and whenever a sufficient hydrogen economy is finally established, to reduce the pollution damage that could accumulate between now and then.
- Wildfires - Raquel Silano
- My solution to reinvent the way people think about wildfires and their purpose in rejuvenating the earth, involves a restructured educational plan, coverage by the media, governmental mandates and an official committee- The Burn Factor. The combination of all four of these ideas will lead to increased awareness and ultimately, respect, for Earth’s natural processes. In addition to increased understanding of wildfires and their necessary role in our ecosystem, people will have a greater understanding of their place in the world and that they cannot be in control of everything.
- Antibacterial Dilemma - Lemuel Brown
- This is a detailed approach on solving the antibacterial dilemma. There is background information on the topic as well as a proposal to solve the issue. The solution gets the young people of America involved most importantly.
- Restoring Earth One Step at a Time - Mir Ali
- This solution is taking the idea of recycling to the next level. The action is mainly focused on increasing the amount of recycled material. This action is basic and an unique approach to encourage the idea of recycling.
