On Saturday, rain and clouds gave way to sunny, warm weather for our final “Heart This City” service event in Point State Park. 80 volunteers from across Pittsburgh turned up to join AEO and SCA volunteers. It was exciting to see groups from Pittsburgh Cares, Pitt, CMU, Duquesne, the SCA Green Cities fellows, and Southwest employees join in the action to Heart our City!

I heart the rolling hills. I heart the rivers. I heart the bridges. I heart the Steelers. I truly heart this tough little city.

Yep, you guessed it! We have finally arrived in Pittsburgh, the City of Champions. I will refrain from using this blog as a platform to write solely about how much I heart this city. But I am super excited to be in my hometown.

We made it to the Windy City! This week, I arrived with the stellar “HeART this City” team and immediately set to prepping for Saturday’s event. Chicago has been warm and sunny, much to my surprise. Spring in this city is significantly nicer than I expected!

We made it to New Orleans! And then out of New Orleans a little earlier than expected, but more on that later. This city’s charm immediately captivated me - I can firmly say that I Heart this City! This being my first time to NOLA, I was so excited to work and discover the town. Upon arrival, we immediately took a stroll around City Park, marveling at the beautiful trees, sculpture garden, and the people boating by.

What a day! It was so exciting to see so many people come out to the kick-off event for HeART This City. We started out the day bright and early at 7am to begin setting up for the day’s activities. I got to work preparing my domain - the registration table. We adorned it with our sweet limited-edition t-shirts, water bottles, SCA sunglasses, and breakfast. Meanwhile, my compadres began prepping the timber for planter box construction.

Editor’s note: Over the next several weeks, SCA and American Eagle Outfitters are bringing love to urban greenspaces across the country with a series of major service events called “HeART this City.” Native plants will be planted, massive murals will be painted, and hundreds of volunteers will roll up their sleeves to #servetheplanet. Jean’s blog will give you a behind the scenes look at what it takes to organize and lead such an undertaking.
