cc0.jpgSCA Conservation Crews are a chance for you to give back to the world. They’re also a way for you to gain new skills, friends, and experiences as you live and work in the environment you’re helping to protect.

Together with your crew (6-8 high school students from around the country) and your two experienced leaders, you’ll be up early, sun or rain, felling trees, prying rocks from the ground, building lean-tos, and removing invasive species. You will become proficient at filtering water and cooking over a 2-burner propane stove, you will learn to use a pulaski or mccloud to grub, and you may be able to teach someone how to correctly dig a back-country latrine while respecting “leave no trace” ethics.

While learning new outdoor skills, you will also work with others to solve tough problems, be part of a team to run your camp—cooking, cleaning, sharing responsibilities—and get in awesome physical shape.

Tangible benefits run the gamut from jaw-dropping photos, new friends and role models, possible references for future employment/school positions, and an official confirmation of volunteer service hours available upon request. There are other, less tangible benefits too. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or it’s your first time away from home, working on an SCA crew is an intense experience. You bond with the other crew members and crew leaders as you share shelter, feasts, and alpine swimming holes. You will be tested to discover what you’re capable of and what your real priorities are. Your SCA Crew experience can charge you to evaluate yourself, broaden your perspective, and change the world.
