SCA Houston is looking for motivated, hardworking high school students for our Summer Job Program. Join our crews to work Monday through Friday for 3 to 5 weeks starting June 24th in local parks and community gardens. Our students help to build and maintain trails, boardwalks, benches and fences, plant trees, restore native habitat, remove invasive plant species and improve community gardening.

SCA Houston is now recruiting high school Crew Members and adult Crew Leaders for the 2012-2013 School Year Program! The Program runs one weekend a month from December through April, with each weekend combining a camping trip, a conservation service project, environmental education and outdoor recreation.

Students must be 15-19 years old and must commit to attending all 5 weekends. Crew Leaders need to be 21+, have a clean driving record and be CPR/First Aid certified.

The Program dates are:

• December 7-9
• January 19-20                                                                                                    
• February 16-17
• March 23-24
• April 20-21

SCA Houston had a very successful summer season, with 36 youth completing either a six week or a three week crew program. Members came from all over Houston and worked in seven different parks:

• the Houston Arboretum and Nature Center
• Last Organic Outpost's Emile Street Farm
• Memorial Park
• Sheldon Lake State Park
• the Spring Creek Greenway
• Terry Hershy Park
• Westbury Community Garden

In addition, the members also were able to take part in fishing and archery activities and learned about different "green job" opportunities in the Houston area.

SCA Houston is looking forward to our fall service events and will be recruiting for the 2012-2013 School Year Program, a volunteer program that has members performing conservation service projects and going on camping trips one weekend a month from December through April. SCA Houston is now recruiting for our 2011-2012 School Year Program! Our program takes students camping one weekend a month from December through April. On those weekends we do a conservation service project (trail building/maintenance, habitat restoration, etc.), environmental education and outdoor recreation (hiking, kayaking, fishing, archery, etc.). It's a great opportunity for students to earn volunteer service hours, meet new friends from all across Houston, give back to the community and have a lot of fun! In addition, some members that complete the program will be eligible for scholarships to a SCA National Crew and we'll send them out to a National Park to live and work for the summer with students from all over the US.

It was pouring rain, boots were caked in mud, and rain jackets were soaked, but none of Houston’s Conservation Leadership Corps (CLC) members cared as they helped plant their 150th loblolly pine outside the George Bush Intercontinental Airport on Will Clayton Parkway. The students felt a great sense of accomplishment at the end of the day, for they participated in the largest volunteer tree planting in Houston’s history.
