An interactive journal for SCA Alumni and Friends, September 2008
The national service movement is gaining momentum, with ServiceNation's “Day of Action” and National Public Lands Day, on September 27. But it doesn’t end on that Saturday –- service can become a way of life, a way of being in the world. Especially for SCA alumni. Read their accounts below and you’ll be inspired to service too. As always, we welcome your feedback. Please click here to update your contact information or subscribe to Hands On — Deb Keller, SCA's Electronic Communications Coordinator

I pause, current rushing around me in the nearly waist deep river, watching the water pour down, around, and over a large bounder in the middle of the Virgin River in Zion National Park. There’s really no choice.

by Megan Allinger, ’07
Last August, Sarah Logan Beasley from Tallahassee, FL was named SCA’s 50,000 volunteer in a celebration at Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This summer, Sarah journeyed to Alaska with another SCA crew and she was happy to tell us about the experience.

by Lauren Freedman, SCA Staff
As a relatively new SCA staff member, I was thrilled to go on my first site visit. I’ve spent the last six months learning about what SCA members do in the field (answer: everything!), writing stories about their adventures, and appreciating from afar just how much hard work is done in the name of SCA. So when I planned my vacation to California this summer, I made sure to include a visit to Sequoia National Forest so that I could finally see it all for myself.

Planetwalker Worth the Read
|
by Kevin Petersen, ’07
While browsing a local bookstore, I saw a picture on a hardback cover of a banjo-slinging, backpack-wearing, bearded man who I immediately recognized. It was John Francis, Ph.D., who I had read about just a short time earlier in a Sierra Club magazine. The book was Francis’ Planetwalker: 22 Years of Walking. 17 Years of Silence, which was reprinted in April of this year by National Geographic.

Don’t you just love hitting the trail? Whether you’re hitting it with a Pulaski or with your booted feet (or maybe in Chacos), it’s a great experience. SCA makes that experience happen for thousands of young people every year – for many it’s their first trail experience. Help us make it happen -- make a secure online donation today.

Our Favorite Outdoor Hero
|
|
If you haven’t seen the current L.L.Bean catalog, you don’t want to miss this one. Page 75 features SCA Founder Liz Titus Putnam as one of Bean’s Outdoor Heroes for 2008. We especially like Liz’s quote: “Nature is a need. We need it for our spirit. We need it for our soul.”
