Naval Air Station Patuxent River and Webster Field Annex, MD
Intern will be expected to survey forest bird species by call (some training provided). The intern will also be responsible for: conducting weekly checks of nest boxes on station and recording the species using the nest boxes; banding young bird before they fledge, when possible; preparing nest boxes for use, including building, repairing, and doing general maintenance; locating sites for new and existing bluebird, purple martin, and wood duck nest boxes; providing a summary of the nest box data in electronic form at the end of their term. The intern will feed and care for the live animals in the educations center as part of their daily and weekly routine. As time permits, the intern will have the opportunity to participate in other seasonal projects. Conduct forest bird surveys and surveys of artificial bird nest structures (90%); and assist with other surveys as needed (10%).Ideal candidate has the ability to work with minimal supervision in areas with poisonous plants and animals, allergens, temperature extremes and inclement weather. Minimum of 2 years college in area related to ornithology, wildlife management/ biology, natural resources, or other biological sciences; experience in habitat survey; experience with bird identification (sight or sound).
