Baca National Wildlife Refuge is located in the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado. It is an arid climate at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet. Crestone, CO is the nearest town with a small grocery store and a few restaurants. Larger cities such as Salida and Alamosa are about a 1-hour drive from the refuge headquarters.

This is a biological science internship. Incumbent will perform a variety of basic operational tasks in support of programs conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service on the Baca Nationa Wildlife Refuge and other refuge in the San Luis Valley National Wildlife Refuge Complex, including: Observes and records a wide variety of wildlife habitat conditions. Collects field data to assess habitat suitability and value for wildlife. Works as a team member in conducting wildlife nesting surveys as well as habitat restoration projects, other biological surveys and other forms of fieldwork. Maintains detailed field notes. Writes and assists biologists with preparing comprehensive reports of findings. Assists higher graded biologists, technicians and managers in the operation of more sophisticated equipment or equipment systems. Performs routine technical tasks common to the organization of the Refuge's biological program. Performs routine maintenance on facilities and equipment as needed. Operates government owned vehicles including pickup trucks and ATVs (will become FWS certified) Biologist in carrying out biological monitoring on the Baca NWR.MUST APPLY BY MARCH 16, 2013.
