Archeology Intern

Categories:

The park is located in a harsh desert environment. Weather extremes can be expected. The headquarters is in Twentynine Palms in a rural environment. The city of Palm Springs offers all amenities and is about an hour away.

You will be involved in archeological work with the cultural resources branch of the resources division, and will work on various cultural resource projects. One project is working on a crew conducting archeological site stabilization. The stabilization includes blocking visitor-created social trails immediately outside of a Native American archeological site using both native plants and vertical mulch. You will GPS holes, sift soil through 1/8 inch screen, sort artifacts, catalog artifacts, and help compile a draft report. It is also expected that several small site stabilization efforts will be addressed such as cleaning up illegal fire rings and artifact piles stacked by visitors. A second project is helping to complete the Barker Dam survey and excavation work conducted in February 2011. This will include database entry and cataloging of artifacts. The third project involves helping finalize site records and doing data entry for a park boundary archeological inventory conducted between 2010 and 2012. Other occasional tasks may include monitoring sites during construction activities, conducting condition assessments on recorded sites, working as a crew member on an excavation, participating in historic structures stabilization, organizing and maintaining various files, database entry, and assisting with other resource division projects as needed.
