The Tetlin National Wildlife Refuge, located in Alaska’s eastern Interior, has 730,000 acres of wetlands, forests and tundra with a variety of wildlife including swans, ducks, raptors, songbirds, moose, bears, and caribou. The refuge operates a visitor center near the Alaska/ Canada border and is the first to welcome summer visitors into Alaska. The refuge also maintains other visitor facilities (three hiking trails, two campgrounds, interpretive pullouts) along 65 miles of the Alaska Highway. The closest town with amenities is Tok, which is 50 miles for the refuge bunkhouse located at the Northway Junction.

If you like interacting with people and are interested in connecting them to the wildlife and habitats of Alaska – this position is for you! Tetlin Refuge is within the boreal forest ecosystem of Interior Alaska providing habitats for numerous migratory bird species, moose, caribou, and bears. Tetlin has a unique cultural tie to the indigenous Athabascan people who live within the region. The intern will be working with Native Park Rangers who share their traditional uses of local plants and animals in their interpretation of refuge resources. The main duties of this position includes engaging with visitors; offering information on recreational opportunities on Tetlin Refuge and other statewide visitor facilities; conducting daily operations and maintenance of the visitor center; and developing and presenting deck talks, trail walks and evening campground programs. Requirements for this position include the ability to communicate both orally and in writing and possession of a valid driver’s license. It is desirable for the person to have some academic background in biology, natural resource management and experience in dealing with people and the outdoors. The person should be of good physical condition and be able to lift loads weighing up to 40 lbs. and walk at least 3 miles on uneven terrain.*Please note: This position is limited to candidates currently residing in Alaska.
