SCA Northeast

SCA Northeast

Connecticut | Maine | Massachusetts | New Hampshire | New York | Rhode Island | Vermont

This expansive region is home to more than a half-dozen community conservation programs that provide jobs and career training for urban teens, three large conservation corps that provide community outreach plus support for state parks in partnership with AmeriCorps, and the SCA National Conservation Center, our LEED-certified training and operations facility in Charlestown, NH.

Across the Northeast, you are just as likely to meet an SCA volunteer in a local classroom as on the Appalachian Trail; in a NY DEC research lab as on Cape Cod National Seashore.  As SCA addresses the area’s distinctive environmental needs, among the most urgent is the ecological devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy.  Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, in partnership with the City of New York, recently charged SCA to lead a youth-fueled, multi-year restoration effort in federal and city parklands affected by the storm.  After just a few months, National Park Service officials stated some parks were already in better shape than they were before Sandy.   That’s the sort of impact SCA members make here every day.

News, Stories & Projects

My name’s Tom, and as an SCA outreach assistant with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s communications office in the northeast, I’ll be sharing stories with you these next few months.

I’m a senior English major at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, and besides working with the Service, I’m an editor at the student newspaper and perform with UMass’s premiere sketch comedy troupe. I’m looking forward to talking to you about conservation news and entertaining, educating nature stories.
