Since 2001, through participation in the Unilever-SCA National Park
Congressional Internship Program, student leaders gain real world
experience through summer immersion in a National Park complimented by
an internship in a Congressional office on Capitol Hill. Unilever and
SCA are pleased to welcome the Spring 2006 National Park Congressional
Interns.
January 2006 - August 2006 Interns
Nick Dobric
Congressional Office: Jim Costa, CA
National Park: Alaska region
Nick Dobric a graduate of Northland College in Ashland, WI Nick
received his Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Studies in
December 2005. While a student he served as a Senator for the
Student Association and received the Xcel Energy Environmental
Scholarship and Service Award. Nick organized campaigns with the
non-profit advocacy group Habitat Education Center that contributed to
more sustainable land management practices in the Chequamegon National
Forest. He founded GreenFire on Northland’s campus which engages
students in local environmental issues like the delisting of the grey
wolf from the ESA. Nick also has served as a Wilderness Ranger in
the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and as a Forestry Intern in
Ashland. Nick is from Park Ridge, IL and volunteers as a Helping
Hand for Senior Citizens.
Kassandra Hardy
Congressional Office: Steven Rothman, NJ
National Park: Yosemite National Park
Kassandra Hardy studied Environmental Studies and Government at St.
Lawrence University, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in May
2005. Kass, an SCA alumna, served at Glacier National Park, during the
summers of 2003 and 2004. She interned as a Naturalist and as a
Transportation Interpreter receiving an Americorps education award for
her service She has also worked on the Hudson River Project as a
Vegetation Processor. Prior to the Hudson River Project, she monitored
ground-level Ozone along the Appalachian Trail in Maine. Over the
past year, Kass has been involved with St. Lawrence’s first
Environmental Studies Major Club and Reuse Initiative Program. Kass is
from Stillwater, New York. She is skilled in whitewater paddling,
mountaineering, orienteering, navigating, and has been a Big Sister for
three years.
Stephen Oliphant
Congressional Office: Henry Brown, SC
National Park: Fort Sumter National Historic Site
Stephen Oliphant is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Arts degree at
Utah State University, studying Speech and Political Science, with an
emphasis in U.S. Government. He is a member of Pi Sigma Alpha, and the
Political Science National Honor Society. Stephen has worked in the
North Carolina State Legislature for two summers as a Senate page and
office assistant. For two years, Stephen served as a full-time
missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in
Boise, Idaho. Stephen’s hometown is Charlotte, North Carolina where for
two years he volunteered as a Varsity leader in a local Boy Scout troop.
