|
The Student Conservation Association’s Seattle Conservation Leadership Corps (CLC) hosted one of the city’s largest Earth Day events on Saturday, April 22nd at the Washington Park Arboretum. After a morning rally kicked off by Seattle City Mayor Greg Nickels, SCA President Dale Penny, and the Arboretum’s director David Mabberley, CLC youth led over 215 volunteers in various conservation projects and educational activities throughout the park.
The Seattle CLC, which is comprised of 34 high school students, planned and led the event. Together they accomplished the following in the months leading up to Earth Day:
- worked with agency partners (Seattle City Parks & Recreation, University of Washington Botanic Gardens, and the Arboretum staff) to arrange project logistics
- solicited food and beverage donations
- created press & media releases, created and filmed a PSA on KOMO 4 TV
- invited & confirmed attendance of Mayor Nickels
- recruited volunteers, including the following groups: Seattle Language Academy, UW Earth Club, AMEC, JConnect, Natural Helpers, troupes of Boy and Girl Scouts, and SCA Alumni
- applied for and received Seattle Parks & Rec Teen Leadership Board “Giving Back” Grant
The event itself was a major success. The following are the day’s service accomplishments:
- created 800 feet of a new high-profile trail to reroute path around historical cottage
- multiple truck loads of invasive species removed
- spread mulch along 1200 feet of Azalea Way
- over 60 pre-K through high school youth participated in environmental education activities presented by UW Botanic Gardens, Facing the Future, and the Wilderness Awareness School at a kid-friendly site
