Leave No Trace Print

During the weekend of April 1-2, four of our Old Faithful students and three crew leaders joined two Master Educators of Leave No Trace for a two day backpacking trip along the Elwa River Valley in Olympic National Park.Students and crew leaders prepared lessons about assigned Leave No Trace principles, then used the lessons on the rest of the group to teach Leave No Trace.

The Leave No Trace principles were established when people started realizing that with more and more use of the backcountry, hikers and campers were literally loving the wilderness to death. The seven principles of Leave No Trace are

  • Plan Ahead and Prepare,
  • Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces,
  • Dispose of Waste Properly,
  • Leave What You Find,
  • Minimize Campfire Impacts,
  • Respect Wildlife,
  • Be Considerate of Other Visitors.

These principles are designed to promote minimal impact camping and hiking. Our students and crew leaders are now official Leave No Trace Trainers and will use these skills to help teach the participants on their upcoming summer conservation crews.
