Getting Dirty Cleaning up the Duwamish Print
Cleaning UpThis past March SCA's Conservation Leadership Corps members helped out at the largest Superfund site in the nation. The Duwamish River harbors waste, heavy metals, and other contaminants resulting from industry along the river and storm runoff from the city of Seattle. In early March our CLC students and crew leaders went on a tour of the Duwamish River with the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition. Every person on the tour learned something new about the Duwamish River, what cleanup efforts are being made, and how community members can get involved.

Our students put their knowledge into action working on two different sites along the Duwamish River. One group worked with People for Puget Sound in the Hamm Creek area. The other group worked at Gateway Park South, which is separated from the residential neighborhood by a corridor of industry. To help make this park more friendly to people in the community, our students pulled out huge stands of invasive Himalayan Blackberry, picked up trash, and planted new native plants.
