- Fisheries Internships are great positions for anyone looking to gain field experience. Not only will you have the opportunity to work directly with fish populations, but you will also be able to make important contacts in the field.
- In 2007 there were over 60 SCA Fisheries internships located in 17 states in all regions of the country. Fisheries interns worked with state and federal agencies, including the National Park Service and the Fish and Wildlife Service.
- Fisheries interns conduct stream and fish surveys; feed and care for fish; and may help maintain hatchery equipment and facilities.
Your formal training will vary depending on your responsibilities but may include site orientation; water quality analysis; fish and disease/parasite identification; aquatic ecology; hand and power tool use; heavy equipment safety and personal safety. On-the-job training will also be provided, including mentoring that takes place throughout your internship.
- Sites are typically looking for interns with an interest in fisheries management, basic math, chemistry, and biology skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Experience in fisheries management can be helpful, but is not required.
