Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Every year, on two occasions—Martin Luther King Jr. Day in January and Earth Day in the spring—SCA members, alumni, staff, and supporters come together to tackle environmental service projects in the San Francisco Bay Area. In recent years, we: worked at a native plant nursery with Friends of Sausal Creek in Oakland’s Joaquin Miller Park; got our hands dirty in San Francisco community gardens working on a project organized in partnership with the San Francisco Parks Trust and SF Garden Resource Organization; and joined local youth and staff of Alameda Point Collaborative’s Growing Youth Project in turning an abandoned field into a thriving garden and neighborhood park.
Participants sign up as volunteers and come armed with work gloves, leather boots, sunscreen, hat and a water bottle. SCA provides snacks and/or lunch, while our local partner agency provides tools and instructions for getting the job done. Please join us this coming year on either or both days, to participate in a fun day of outdoor service work and community building! For more information, call the SCA California/Southwest Office at (510) 832-1966. The world is calling. What's your answer?
