Making a Tangible Difference with CLC Print

Jackie working hardThe best part about the Conservation Leadership Corps to Jackie Quinn was being able to “actually see the difference you’re making”, as she shoveled dirt to make drainage pipes in a part of the trail that had been flooded, pulled out invasive species plants, and other direct, hands-on projects...

A big part of CLC is learning conservation and trail work skills, and the crew got to do some work that made a real difference and prepared them for their month-long crew this summer.

The CLC group sleeping under the stars Jackie, a cheerful and enthusiastic sixteen year old from Albany, joined CLC expecting a good experience, but she didn’t expect it to “be as fun as it was and to meet so many cool people.”

Jackie has always liked camping and being in nature so she enjoyed being outdoors on the five weekends spent with CLC at various sites around the Bay Area and vicinity. Her favorite weekend was the first one at Slide Ranch. One of her fondest memories from the entire CLC experience was on the second night of this first weekend when the students took tarps out to a field and slept outside under the stars. “It was pretty much a big party” she said. Jackie said enthusiastically, “it was an amazing experience. I would advice anyone to do it.”

This summer Jackie is going to Acadia National Park in Maine for her month long crew. She hopes to go backcountry back packing as a part of her end of crew trip, as she has never done this before. She feels confident and prepared for her trip and although she is a little nervous (like with most new experiences in life) she is mostly just excited!
