For a team of Student Conservation Association
volunteers, the season ended yesterday, deep in the wet woods behind
Our Lady of the Valley cemetery.
Swaddled in layers of mosquito-resistant clothing, the six volunteers
spent their last day on the job lopping out clumps of invasive plants,
brush, and poison ivy.
It was thankless work, to be sure, but crew leader Richard Richards (SCA Note: Richard will be speaking at the 2008 Conservation Commencement ),
25, of Greensboro, N.C., said he was grateful for the opportunity.
Richards' volunteer work started last winter at Savoy Elementary
School, where he led classes in nature conservancy. In the spring, he
joined a group of other conservation internship volunteers, and the
team began a series of projects around the state.
