As
work progresses on Hermit Road, the parallel project to rehabilitate
the Rim Trail has gotten 300 yards closer to completion thanks to the
efforts of a visiting team from the Student Conservation Association.
The
SCA matches student volunteers with conservation projects of a few
weeks and up to a month on public lands all over the country. The
seven-member crew working on the Rim Trail is the first SCA group to
serve in the park in more than 15 years.
They expect to finish
this week on the stretch of trail past Mohave Point, overlooking The
Abyss. Under the direction of trail crew leader Rich Goepfrich, they
are grading a three-foot-wide path, shoring it up with rock liners and
helping to build twin rock stairways.
