Mount Rainier Recovery

Volunteers on the Wonderland Trail

The second season of the Mount Rainier Recovery has started.  Find the calendar, pictures and stories on the park's volunteer blog page!

July 22-26 Project -- Join Us!

Do you find yourself longing for those SCA days gone by?  Then it's time to reunite and get those hands dirty once again!  What better place than Mount Rainier National Park, home for the second year in a row to SCA high school crews, conservation interns AND the Recovery Corps?

Join us for a 5-day, 3-stringer bridge replacement project on the Kautz Creek Trail, a 3-mile hike from the trailhead.  This is a gorgeous location set in giant trees.  All alumni are welcome to pitch their tents in the Longmire Campground -- a 10-minute drive up the road and home to the Corps -- and to join us for meals (There is no cost to you, thanks to a grant from the Alumni office, but donations are certainly welcome).

Due to project logistics, space is limited to 10 or so alumni.  We are looking for folks who can come for the week, but will be open to partial-week volunteers if we're unable to fill our spots.  Our project will run July 22 - 26 (Tuesday - Saturday).  Click here to register.  We hope you'll join the SCA team on the mountain!

The first season of the Mount Rainier Recovery program came to a triumphant close on National Public Lands Day in September with a final, festive day of hands-on service and celebration with some 150 enthusiastic individuals. Here are some of the impressive numbers from the 2007 season:

• Total Volunteers: at least 1,724
• Overall hours of service: over 84,038
• Estimated value of volunteer work: exceeding $1.58 million
• Portion of trailwork completed by volunteers: over half

SCA played a significant role in the success of the volunteer program.  Here's a sample of what SCA members and the volunteers:

• Hands-on conservation service provided by SCA:  exceeding 27,700 hours
• Volunteers coordinated and led by SCA's Mount Rainier Recovery Corps: 701
• Wonderland Trail reroute constructed:  5,400 ft.
• Trail brushed:  55,670 ft.
