Next Steps

1. Application is completed/ updated. To complete the application, you must follow every step through to 'submit application' and have at least one reference form completed and returned to SCA.
2. Deadlines. The suggested application deadline for summer positions is February 15th (see Dates Chart above for more dates). We begin reviewing applications after this date and send them to site coordinators in our ‘first send-out’. If you do not hear from us within 3 weeks of the application deadline, please contact us. If the position is not filled from those initial applications, we continue to review and send more applications on a regular basis until the position is filled.
3. Applications Reviewed and Sent. After the application deadline, the SCA Placement Coordinator begins reviewing applications. The Placement Coordinator considers the needs of our partners and forwards a handful of qualified applications to the site. You will be sent to at least one position, but not every position on your application. When your application is sent, you will receive an email that includes the contact information for that site. You should then contact the site to express interest and set up a phone interview.
4. Interviews and Offers. During the phone interview with the site, you will learn more about the position. The site coordinator decides who will be offered the position. If offered a position by the site, you will confirm your acceptance of the offer and the coordinator notifies SCA. Accepting a position is a commitment and you are not allowed to consider other SCA opportunities during the same time period.
5. Adding more positions. You should follow up with any positions where your application has been sent. If the position is filled or you have only been sent to one location, you should consider adding a few more positions to your application from the Staff Picks list as these are positions for which we are actively recruiting.

Ten Tips for Applicants1. Use a PC and Internet Explorer. Our online application is currently not compatible with other systems.
2. Make your First Impression Count! Your application is your introduction to SCA and site coordinators. More information is better - tell how you gained your experience and skills, especially if you rank yourself intermediate or better. When attaching your resume, make sure it looks professional. Spelling counts! If you don't have a way to spell check, ask someone you know to read over your application and help you.
3. Read descriptions carefully! Read through the entire position description. Make sure your application accurately reflects your skills and availability and that you meet the site's requirements before adding the position to your application.
4. Follow up! Follow up with your references to make sure they complete the form. Follow up on any emails you receive from SCA or site coordinators (even if it's to say you are no longer interested). Follow up with coordinators when your application gets sent. (Make sure you are receiving SCA emails by adding us to your safe list!)
5. Update your information! Keep your contact info current - email is our primary method of contact. If your availability changes, change it on your application.
6. Focus your efforts. Make sure your dates and qualifications match the position's before adding it to your application. Add at least 4 positions, with 8 to 10 being the best to maximize your chances of getting an internship that interests you. Once you attach a position to your application you will not be able to remove it and keep in mind that there is no way to rank your preferences.
7. Choose a variety of locations and work types. Consider places that you may not have heard of before (Yellowstone and Yosemite, not to mention Alaska and Hawaii are very popular). It is often the smaller/lesser known sites that offer the widest breadth of experiences.
8. Start Early. This gives your references time to complete the forms and for you to follow up (see #4). It also increases your chances of completing your application by the suggested deadline, which will give you the best chance of being included in the first round of applcations to be sent to a site.
9. Visit the SCA website frequently. It provides up to date, useful information. The FAQ's page will help answer most of your questions. Staff Picks highlights positions we are most actively recruiting for. It's also the gateway to your application (see #5) as well as for contacting the Admissions and other SCA departments.
10. Contact Us. If all else fails, if you can't find the answers you are looking for, are having technical difficulties, or need assistance, please contact us before you become frustrated. Email is generally the easiest at
