The Student Conservation Association (SCA) is seeking two experienced, quality oriented outdoor leaders to supervise a team of 30 interns responsible for completing conservation, construction, and trail maintenance projects in the state of New Hampshire. Members of the New Hampshire Conservation Corps (NHCC) work in crews of 6, and the Roving Crew Supervisors will provide guidance, technical and logistical support on 10-day front and backcountry hitches.
Working in partnership with several agencies, including New Hampshire State Parks, The Society for the Protection of NH Forests, The White Mountain National Forest, and the Corporation for National and Community Service (AmeriCorps), SCA NHCC teams will use traditional trail skills, restoration techniques, carpentry skills, and hard labor to complete an array of projects aimed at protecting and enhancing the lands and cultural resources of the state. Typical past projects have included new trail construction, rock retaining wall and staircase construction, erosion control, historic building restoration, and trail maintenance/reroutes.
The Roving Crew Supervisors are responsible for coordinating with the agency and the SCA NHCC Conservation Manager on the design, implementation and evaluation of these work projects, as well as safely supervising a crew in all aspects of their work. This is a full-time, temporary, position.
Period of Employment
June 8, 2008 – October 25, 2008 (22 weeks)
Salary starting at $450.00/week
Qualifications- Required
- 21 years of age or older.
- Previous trail construction experience and the knowledge and ability to perform trail construction and maintenance work in a variety of ecosystems.
- 2-4 years prior experience in supervising young adults in an outdoor, wilderness setting.
- Wilderness First Responder/CPR certification
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, strong work ethic are required.
- Self starter ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Able to carry heavy loads up to 50 pounds and be able to work in outdoor environment exposed to the elements including camping and hiking for extended periods of time. Up to 5-10 days per hitch.
- Have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and be approved to drive through SCA’s driving policies.
- Have working knowledge of safely operating power and hand-tools.
- Griphoist experience and Chainsaw certification desired
Compensation and Housing
Meals and housing provided. Tents and group camping gear will be provided for field based projects. Personal vehicle required: vehicles will be provided to transport the crews for work purposes but Roving Crew Supervisors will be required to use personal vehicle; SCA will reimburse at $.40 per mile.
