Project Leader - Fire Monitoring Teams, Great Plains Region

Cover lots of spectacular ground working in partnership with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and local tribes. SCA FIREMON teams will use FIREMON protocols, basic forestry and range techniques, GPS, and GIS to collect vegetation and geological data. The data will assist partners with the development of effective land management strategies. A team of one project leader and four team members will travel to various sites within their region for up to eight days at a time. Current openings include:
- Great Plains Region, ND & SD This position will be based out of Bismarck, North Dakota, but will require travel and camping for periods of up to eight days at a time. Work will be conducted on the tribal grounds of the Standing Rock Sioux and the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa with occasional work assignments on tribal grounds throughout South Dakota.
Primary Responsibilities: Project Leaders will work in conjunction with partner agencies and SCA staff to meet the goals of the project; manage site logistics and administrative tasks; interview, select, supervise and lead interns; and provide for their safety in the field. In addition to their role as project leaders, they will carry out field work; identify and collect plot data; compile and analyze FIREMON data; and present work to agency partners. Other potential responsibilities include prescribed burning, public outreach and education, and SCA recruiting.
Training Provided: Project Leaders will come together with SCA staff in Boise, ID for a two-week training on technical FIREMON field skills and SCA processes. Project Leaders will also join their teams in late May/early June for a ten-day team member training in McCall, ID.
Housing, Transportation, Other: Housing may be provided; transportation for all work activities provided; personal transportation recommended. Position involves long hours in the field working in all weather conditions and in rough terrain.
Qualifications - Required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; minimum age requirement 21 years old; field work/outdoor experience; minimum of 2 years leadership experience; strong computer skills; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; attention to detail; Wilderness First Responder/Aid and CPR certification; ability to camp outdoors for up to 8 days at a time; good physical condition. Valid driver’s license and driving record within SCA guidelines; ability to pass SCA background check.
Qualifications - Preferred: Prior experience with GPS, fire, forestry, geography, GIS, Range Management, and/or related subjects; ability to take initiative and work both independently and as part of a team; plant identification; map & compass skills; budget management experience; minimum impact camping skills; enthusiasm for the outdoors; experience working with Native American populations; and a sense of adventure.
