Use prescribed fire to restore natural landscapes and reduce the risk of wildfires in the Northeast. In certain landscapes prescribed fire increases and improves habitat for plants and animal as fire plays and integral part in protecting and preserving natural lands valued so highly in New York. The glacial Pine Barrens hosts some of the most rare and threatened species, of which many depend on fire to survive. Each Fire Management team will be made up one project leader and three team members to help with this ecological survival of species.
Current openings include:
- Long Island Chapter of the Nature Conservancy, New York; This position will be based out of Cold Springs Harbor, New York.
Primary Responsibilities: As the project leader you will assist agency fire specialists in conducting a variety of essential fire management activities. Working in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, the SCA fire management teams will work on fuels reduction projects, prescribed burning, creating fire plans, and invasive species control: all projects aimed at protecting natural areas. Typical projects may include burn preparation, managing fire cache, removal of invasive vegetation, fire plan research and mapping burn areas. Interns will serve 12 months.
Training Provided: Project Leaders will come together with SCA staff in Boise, ID for a two-week training on technical field skills and SCA processes. Project Leaders will also join their teams in late May/early June for a ten-day team member training in McCall, ID.
Housing, Transportation, Other: Housing may be provided; transportation for all work activities provided; personal transportation recommended. Position involves long hours in the field working in all weather conditions and in rough terrain.
Qualifications - Required: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience; minimum age requirement 21 years old; field work/outdoor experience; minimum of 2 years leadership experience; strong computer skills; excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; attention to detail; Wilderness First Responder/Aid and CPR certification; good physical condition; ability to pass arduous level pack test. Valid driver’s license and driving record within SCA guidelines; ability to pass SCA background check.
Qualifications - Preferred: Prior experience with fire management, forestry, geography, GIS, GPS and/or related subjects; ability to take initiative and work both independently and as part of a team; plant identification; map & compass skills; minimum impact camping skills; enthusiasm for the outdoors; knowledge about fire and/or fire ecology; fire experience S130/190; using mechanical tools; managing a budget; and a sense of adventure.
