Project Leader, Northeast Exotic Plant Management Team Print
npc_flower.jpgThe Student Conservation Association (SCA), a national force of conservation volunteers is seeking experienced; quality oriented outdoor leaders to supervise teams of four interns doing conservation field work.         

Background:  Work in partnership with the National Park Service (NPS)—Northeast Exotic Plant Management Team (EPMT) program to restore native plant habitat at many of the 23 NPS units in New England, NY, DE and Eastern PA. Primary Responsibilities:  Provide a positive, safe and meaningful service-learning experience for members and partners.  Locate and control non-native invasive plant populations using mechanical/hand tools and herbicide application. Update invasive plant geo-spatial data including treatment methods and area. Assist with public outreach and education. Assure project compliance with all SCA field operation standards. Work with SCA program staff and agency partners to develop and manage the work plan to include member training, work schedule, communication and reports.

Training Provided:  Project Leaders will come together in Boise, Idaho for one week of SCA staff orientation and training. Project Leaders will also join their teams and peers in late May for a member training at Mount Rainier National Park in Washington State.

Housing, Transportation, Other:  Housing is not included but may be available in a shared living situation with members. Transportation for all work related activities is provided. Personal transportation is recommended. 

Compensation:  $1,000--$1,090 (does not include housing); seasonal staff benefits.

Period of Employment:  ASAP as of May 5th—September 6, 2008

Qualifications - Required: 21 years of age or older, 1-3 years prior experience supervising young adults in an outdoor, wilderness setting; Previous field botany/invasive plant control experience; Excellent communication and leadership skills; strong work ethic, self starter; Ability to carry heavy loads up to 50 pounds; ability to work in an outdoor environment exposed to the elements for extended periods of time, current WFA/CPR certification; Current driver’s license;  Must pass SCA criminal and MVR background check.  Previous chainsaw experience preferred but not required.
